Hermanto is an plant pathologist, particularly working on epidemy and management of banana diseases. He experienced in conducting, coordinating and managing several in house research and research collaboration under national and international platforms. He currently coordinates research collaboration on Integrated Crop Production of Banana in Indonesia and Australia; Triangle Exploration on Musa Collecting Mission; and The Indonesian banana: protecting a staple food from Panama disease collapse and exploiting its genetic diversity for discovery research. Along his carier, Hermanto is author and co-author for more than 50 papers under national and international publication, and has been supervising several thesis researches from several universities. While running research activities, he is currently holding position as director of Indonesian Tropical Fruit Research Institute under Indonesian Agency for Agriculture Research and Development.
