The Dutch Society for Tropical Medicine has initiated a project on medical history of Indonesia. The first step was to have the Geneeskundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch-Indië (1854-1942) scanned and made accessible in digitalized form. As the journal is in Dutch, a group of 20 medical specialists and researchers are planning to write essays in English on the development of the various disciplines, as reflected in the GTNI. We thrive at coupling Dutch and Indonesian doctors of similar disciplines. A book is planned to be published by the end of 2015.
It is presently explored how the study of medical history can be furthered in Indonesia. One aim is to strengthen the knowledge of local history among teachers of medicine, public health and biomedical science. An idea is to organize a workshop on writing medical history, in the course of 2015. This post-graduate training will be given by professional medical historians.
